How To Get Ready For Your First Festival DJ Set – Once you have made a name for yourself playing clubs it’s time to take the next step and get yourself a DJ set at a festival. Playing a festival will give you the change to gain a ton of brand new fans and potentially lead to more gigs. Here is our guide on How To Get Ready For Your First Festival DJ Set.
Get a feel of the crowd
With it being a festival gig it’s best to give yourself some time to get a feel of the festival, go and explore and let yourself absorb the atmosphere and get the vibe of it. This way you will get to know what the crowd is like and who you will be playing to. One of the main differences when playing a festival is that the stage you are on will be further away from the crowd than what you will be used when playing clubs and smaller venues. This is why it’s important to get a feel of the crowd before you perform.
Prove yourself as quickly as possible
If you are not a headlining DJ then changes are the crowd won’t know who you are and definitely did not come to see you. With this in mind, you will need to win the crow over and prove yourself as quickly as possible. As you are performing at a festival there will be a million distractions from other stages, so you will want to grab and hold their attention as soon as you can.
You need to establish a good relationship with the main crowd. If you manage to do this then the crowd should grow, this, in turn, should grab the attention of the people on the fringe of the crowd. If you pick the right song at the right time you should be able to get the whole crowd going.
Playing it safe, but be brave
Chances are if you’re playing a standard festival your job is to keep the momentum up and the party going. You should really mix up your set, make sure to include crowd favourites and club classics to keep the crowd going and the energy up. With that said once you have got the crowd on side and moving you can take a few chances. This is when you can play some more unknown and niche tracks. It’s worth bearing mind that if there are a lot of other stages and a ton of DJs chances are they are going be playing many of the same tracks, This is where you can stand out and play some of your unique mixes.
Be ready for any technical issues
When playing a festival a whole list of things can go wrong. The festival may not have the right equipment you need or it might break, The heavens could open and the rain starts pouring. Try and bring spares of equipment if possible and practical. When it comes to the weather try to prepare a couple of mixes that will get the crowd going even in the rain.
Remember to have fun
Festivals have a great and unique atmosphere and that’s the great thing about them, the crowd’s energy can be amazing and an unforgettable experience. With all this said, remember to relax, make the most of it and have fun!
